Finally, in early 2007, the final design was approved, and the first ship, the Dreadnought, was laid down at the Terran Star Forge. Multiple delays were caused in the design process because of delays in the development of the new OBX-1 bombardment cannons. The design of the ship took over 6 years. The Dreadnought class was first conceived in 2000 in response to a request from the Admiralty for a large capital ship capable of very heavy orbital bombardment and capable of taking heavy damage. The Dreadnought-class followed the classical dagger shape of many capital ships throughout the history of the Andromeda Galaxy.
